Audit Finds Fundamental Flaws in State Mammogram Program

SACRAMENTO - The California State Auditor released an audit today of the state’s breast cancer screening program – or Every Woman Counts (EWC) – requested last year by Assemblymembers Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) and Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara) in response to the Schwarzenegger Administration’s elimination of breast cancer screening to 100,000 low income women served by the program.

SACRAMENTO, CA –A public-safety bill to help protect domestic violence victims received bipartisan legislative support and is on its way to the governor.

Authored by Sen. Jenny Oropeza, D-Long Beach, Senate Bill 1233 was approved 79-0 late Thursday by the Assembly and would make permanent a proven program to protect victims of domestic violence from having to reveal their address for various official tasks, such as voting or enrolling their child in school.

Legislature Approves Bill to Save State’s Mammogram Program

SACRAMENTO, CA – The State Legislature approved legislation authored by Assemblymembers Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) and Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara) to reform the state’s breast cancer screening program – or Every Woman Counts - and to help restore mammogram access to 100,000 low-income women.

Sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Assembly Bill (AB) 1640 received strong bipartisan support.  The bill now awaits the governor’s signature or veto.

COHN CONTINUES TO BREAK THE SILENCE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

SACRAMENTO — With the stroke of his pen, the Governor eliminated two more barriers for victims of violence with his signature on two bills authored by Assemblywoman Rebecca Cohn (D-Saratoga). Governor Davis signed AB 1909 creating a best practices for courts dealing with domestic violence, and AB 2252 that protects victims of sexual assault by allowing serial rape cases to be tried as one.

Soto Bill Stops Child Support Delinquents from “Running down the clock."

Sacramento – Parents who have custody of their children can now go to court to demand delinquent support even after their child has turned 18 years old. Governor Gray Davis signed into law, Senate Bill 1658 authored by Senator Nell Soto (D-Pomona). The new law will remove a loophole used by deadbeat parents to avoid paying back child support.

Sacramento – Legislators from across the state joined sexual assault advocates in recognizing Denim Day California today, an event in which participants wear denim to “break the dress code and speak out against sexual violence.” The California Coalition Against Sexual Assault CALCASA) hosted the annual Denim Day rally held today on the West steps of the state Capitol.
