WOMEN’S CAUCUS LEADERS SEND LETTER TO NAPOLITANO REGARDING RECENT SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS AT UC CAMPUSES

 

SACRAMENTO – The leaders of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sent a letter today to University of California President Janet Napolitano expressing deep concern about recent allegations of sexual harassment at a number of UC campuses, calling the responses from the institutions where the alleged behavior has occurred “consistently abysmal.”

Women's Caucus Celebrates "Woman of the Year" at State Capitol

SACRAMENTO – The California Legislative Women’s Caucus will celebrate Women’s History Month today by honoring women from around the state in the Assembly chambers. Each Assemblymember in all 80 districts will honor a woman who has contributed greatly to her community.

The Woman of the Year event was started in 1987 by then-Assemblywoman Bev Hansen (R) and then-Assemblywoman Sally Tanner (D), who noticed that the California Legislature had no events planned for the month of March, Women's History Month.

SACRAMENTO – Democratic members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus today announced plans for legislation to address the wage gap that women face at work. Today, the chair of the Women’s Caucus, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) introduced Senate Bill 358, the California Fair Pay Act, which will strengthen California’s equal pay laws to ensure that women are paid equally for work that is comparable to their male colleagues and do not face retaliation if they discuss or ask about pay at work.

SACRAMENTO, CA -- Today, the California State Auditor released a report on the issue of coerced sterilizations in women’s state prisons, Sterilization of Female Inmates. The audit was requested last summer by members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus.

In response, Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, and Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), vice-chair, released the following statements:

Legislative Women's Caucus: We Need a Budget that Keeps California Women Working and Children Learning

SACRAMENTO – Today, the Democratic members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus held a press conference to outline their budget priorities, and underscored the need for a budget that prioritizes the needs of working women and parents and the education of young children as a critical first step to closing the achievement gap. 

In letters sent to leaders of both houses of the Legislature and signed by 22 Democratic members of the Women’s Caucus, as well as in a similar letter sent to the Governor, they requested that the following be included in the 2014-15 budget and be prioritized in negotiations:

SACRAMENTO – On Wednesday, August 21, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus will be launching a speakers series called Women’s Voices, and is pleased to announce that Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, will be the inaugural guest speaker.

Sandberg, the author of Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, will speak at a luncheon being held from noon to 1:15 at 1201 K Street, 15th floor, Sacramento. Attendance at the event is by invitation only, but credentialed media are invited to cover the talk.

Lowenthal Elected Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, was elected to serve as Chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus.  Senator Hannah Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, was elected the Vice Chair.
