Senator Nancy Skinner, Chair, and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry issued the following statement on behalf of the Legislative Women’s Caucus:

“The horrific mass shooting in Monterey Park which claimed the lives of ten people and injured at least ten more is the fifth mass shooting in our country this year, in this, just, the first month of 2023.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. Our hearts also go out to all those affected, and to the entire API community for this senseless act to have occurred on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a holiday that is precious and revered by many in the API community.

“For many celebrating the Lunar New Year, the rabbit is traditionally a symbol of peace. As we welcome the Year of the Rabbit, let us hope that peace can prevail and the epidemic of senseless gun violence that plagues our country can begin to be reversed.

“The California Legislative Women’s Caucus extends our solidarity to our colleagues in the Asian American and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus and our sympathy to the API community in California and beyond and we join them in denouncing this horrific and senseless attack.”
