Statement by the Legislative Women’s Caucus in Reaction to Saturday’s Mass Shooting at the Lunar New Year’s Celebration in Monterey Park, CA

Senator Nancy Skinner, Chair, and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry issued the following statement on behalf of the Legislative Women’s Caucus:

“The horrific mass shooting in Monterey Park which claimed the lives of ten people and injured at least ten more is the fifth mass shooting in our country this year, in this, just, the first month of 2023. 



On 50th Anniversary of Roe v Wade, CA Legislature Passes Resolutions Urging Congress and President Biden to Enact Federal Law Ensuring Access to Abortion and Contraception

Women’s Caucus Achieves Benchmark toward Gender Parity, on Pace to Record 50 Seats in California Legislature

With the gains in this year’s election, California will achieve a record number of women members in the State Legislature and is close to reaching gender parity, a goal that the Legislative Women’s Caucus has been actively working toward since 2016. According to the most recent updates from the California Secretary of State’s Office, women hold or are winning 50 legislative seats statewide and have already outstripped the current record total of 39 seats in the state Assembly and Senate.

Senator Nancy Skinner and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry Elected to Lead California Legislative Women’s Caucus for 2023-24 Legislative Session

SACRAMENTO – The bipartisan and bicameral California Legislative Women’s Caucus elected Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) as its Chair and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters). Their two-year terms will commence on December 5, 2022, the current chair and vice chair will continue to lead the Caucus until then.
