SACRAMENTO – Today is a historic day for the great State of California. Upon being sworn-in this afternoon, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins became the first woman leader of the California State Senate. In California’s history, there have been nearly 4,500 men who have held office in the Senate and Assembly compared to only 154 women. It has been a long road since the first brave women held legislative office – 100 years ago this year. We cannot think of a tribute more fitting to those pioneers than today’s swearing-in of our friend and colleague, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins.
