What's the Gender-Based Wage Gap Where You Live?

Dec 17, 2012

An unprecedented analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data released today by the National Partnership for Women and Families shows that the gender-based wage gap affects women in nearly every corner of the country. In 97 percent of congressional districts — 423 out of 435 districts — the median yearly pay for women is less than the median yearly pay for men. This is the first-ever analysis of these data by congressional district, providing a unique opportunity for women, families and lawmakers to consider the local impact of disparities in pay.

In California, the median pay for a woman working full time, year round is $41,817 per year, while the median yearly pay for a man is $49,281. This means that women are paid 85 cents for every dollar paid to men, amounting to a yearly gap of $7,464 between full-time working men and women in the state.1

Nationally, women working full time, year round are paid just 77 cents for every dollar paid to all men. Women of color experience even greater disparities. African American women are paid 64 cents and Latinas are paid just 55 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.2
