Legislative Women’s Caucus Chair Senator Noreen Evans Praises Plan to Preserve Child Care Subsidies

SACRAMENTO – Assembly Speaker John A. Perez unveiled a plan today to preserve child care subsidies for low-income parents that were formally receiving cash-assistance but are now working. The Legislature adopted a 2010-2011 budget that preserved the funding, but then-Governor Schwarzenegger line-item vetoed the funds.

“This plan will allow struggling parents to continue working and bettering themselves. Cutting these parents’ child care assistance would put them out of work, out of options, and more than likely would result in a greater financial burden on the state,” said Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus Senator Noreen Evans . “Not only is this sound fiscal policy, it is sound morally – what does it say about our society if we eliminate funding used to care for children while their parents are doing the right thing and working hard to improve their family’s situation?”

The proposal utilizes unused child care funding from previous years to cover the subsidies through March. Governor Brown’s proposed budget plan would restore these funds beginning April 1st, however, the Legislature and Governor must reach a budget agreement and enact legislation by that time for the plan to move forward.
