WOMEN’S CAUCUS LEADERS SEND LETTER TO NAPOLITANO REGARDING RECENT SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS AT UC CAMPUSES

SACRAMENTO – The leaders of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sent a letter today to University of California President Janet Napolitano expressing deep concern about recent allegations of sexual harassment at a number of UC campuses, calling the responses from the institutions where the alleged behavior has occurred “consistently abysmal.”

They requested “meaningful discipline,” of the perpetrators, education and training for staff, the involvement of the UC Office of the President in reviewing and proposing disciplinary actions surrounding any allegations of sexual harassment, and the creation of an independent office tasked with the responsibility for handling allegations of sexual harassment.

They added that resolutions of sexual harassment claims should be “fair to the victim and strong enough to communicate that this behavior is unacceptable at our state’s great universities.”

A copy of the letter is available here.

Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) is chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) is vice-chair.
