In a “passing the torch” ceremony the California Legislative Women's Caucus selected new leadership Wednesday evening, naming Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod as its Chair.

“I am pleased to serve as chair of the Women’s Caucus, I will work to ensure women and families are recognized in the legislature,” said Senator Negrete McLeod. Senator Negrete McLeod represents the Inland Empire.

Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña was selected and the Caucus Vice Chair. “I am thrilled to represent the Legislature as vice-chair of the Women’s Caucus. I look forward to working with Senator Negrete McLeod on issues affecting women, especially the concerns of caregivers and military families.”
“I am proud of the work we were able to do on behalf of California’s women and families,” said Berg, “and I am looking forward to another very productive year.” Assemblywoman Patty Berg held the post as past Caucus Chair.

The Caucus has 33 members. There are 23 women in the Assembly and 10 women in the Senate. Of those 33 women, 27 are Democrats and 6 are Republicans.

Over the next year Senator Negrete McLeod will focus her energies and efforts on four Goals of Caucus; Women and Diabetes, Women’s Heart Health, Women Veterans, and Women as Caregivers – the “Sandwich” Generation.

To promote the 2008 goals set forward by the Chair, the Women’s Caucus will host events throughout the year to highlight the topics. The Caucus plays an important role in recognizing the contributions of women by sponsoring the Women of the Year Ceremony, Women’s History Month, and helps raise the awareness about heart disease by supporting the Go Red for Women Campaign.

The chair of the caucus alternates yearly between a member of the Assembly and member of the Senate, and the vice chair is elected from the opposite house of the chair.
