Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego), Vice-Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, addresses a crowd of more than 400 people from across the state who made the trip to the Capitol on May 10, to demand that the Governor stop trying to balance the state budget by targeting programs that principally serve women.
“The Governor’s cuts are going to make it even harder for you and your children to access healthcare and CalWORKs. The Women’s Caucus works hard every year to find practical alternatives so the budget won’t be balanced on your backs, your children’s backs and your family’s backs,” said Senator Kehoe.
Concerned moms rallied against many of the Governor’s proposed budget cuts that would disproportionately affect women. For instance, the Governor has proposed significant reductions and policy changes in the Medi-Cal program where fifty-seven pecent of recipients are women, and in the CalWORKs program where about eighty percent of the participants are women.
The event was led by California Partnership and the California Hunger Action Coalition, and included working moms, nurses and various women’s groups. Assemblymember Sally Lieber, another member of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, also spoke at the rally.
