SACRAMENTO — The Legislative Women’s Caucus announced Wednesday that it has elected Assemblymember Carol Liu (D – La Cañada Flintridge) to chair the caucus. The caucus held its first meeting of the year to announce incoming officers and to discuss its 2005 goals. Senator Christine Kehoe (D – San Diego) was named vice chair of the caucus.

“It is a great honor to be chosen to lead this caucus. Helping California’s women and children is an issue that all of us, regardless of political affiliation, have made a high priority,” Liu said. “I look forward to working with my fellow caucus members to tackle the difficult problems facing the women and children of this state.”

Comprised of 37-members from both the Assembly and Senate, the group was started to encourage collegiality, participation in and cooperation among elected women in California government, and to promote the interests of women, children and families through legislation. The goals announced at Wednesday’s meeting included reform of women’s prisons, fighting cuts to vital programs during the budget process, and protecting working families.
