Sacramento, CA – Yesterday, Governor Gray Davis signed AB 2583 by Assembly Member Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) relating to sexual assault on college campuses, describing AB 2583’s address of campus sex crimes as “a worthwhile endeavor.”

AB 2583 establishes a Campus Sexual Assault Task Force to assess California’s college campuses on the issue of sexual assault and create a set of model guidelines, the “Campus Blueprint to Address Sexual Assault” Report.

Assembly Member Judy Chu’s College Campus Sexual Assault Safety bill stems from her commitment to the safety and civil rights of women. Her prior experience as a rape crisis counselor at UCLA has prompted her to take legislative action to protect the rights and physical wellbeing of women in California.

“I was moved and motivated by the intense reports that victims confided in me to aggressively address violence against women through the legislative process. Rape can never be excused or condoned, and I commend Governor Davis for supporting this fight against campus rape in California,” stated Chu.
