CA LWC LEADERS INTRODUCE URGENCY BILL IN RESPONSE TO ARIZONA ABORTION BAN

SACRAMENTO – California Legislative Women’s Caucus (LWC) Chair Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) and Vice Chair Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters), in partnership with Gov. Gavin Newsom, announced the introduction of new abortion rights legislation today, responding to Arizona’s sweeping ban on reproductive care. An urgency measure, SB 233 would allow Arizona reproductive care providers to immediately perform abortion services in California under an expedited medical licensing process.

We, the Legislative Women's Caucus, are concerned about the wellbeing of and continuity of services for California families who are served by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). For decades, WIC has strengthened food security, improved diet quality, and supported a strong start in life for California children. Nearly one million California women, infants, and children each month benefit from WIC, and recent data shows participation exceeding previous projections as more families are accessing WIC’s vital nutrition services.
