Assemblymember Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge) has been elected to the Executive Board of the Women’s Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). She is the only Californian on the 14-member, bipartisan board composed of women state legislators from across the nation.

The Women’s Legislative Network of NCSL is a national organization whose mission is to promote the participation, empowerment, and leadership of women legislators. The organization provides support and training for women elected to state legislatures. It sponsors forums and workshops on topics of interest to women legislators, holds regional leadership development seminars, partners with other organizations to provide resources and services, and serves as a network for women legislators.

“It is a real privilege for me to serve on the board of the Women’s Legislative Network,” Liu said. “I look forward to working collectively, in a bipartisan fashion, with women from other states to promote issues of mutual interest.”

Nationwide, women hold approximately 23% of the seats in state legislatures and comprise 14% of Congress. Currently there are only six women Governors, “a record high that is unfortunately low,” Liu said. “Hopefully by developing the skills, contacts, and knowledge base of women legislators, we can prepare more women in state office to run for Congress and executive positions. That is precisely why organizations like the Women’s Legislative Network are so important.”
